Point Topic has
released the results of a research which tracks the development of broadband
Internet in the UK
over the past few years. According to the study, Internet speeds have increased
from a basic 512kb connection to 24Mb in the last 6 years, and 78% of UK homes
now have the ability to hook up to 4Mb services, with almost half (42%) having
access to 6Mb services.
The study found
that online use has progressed from basic searching and emailing to downloading
music, playing online games and watching TV and videos on demand. The average
broadband user in the UK
now plays online games for 4 hours 40 minutes and downloads films or trailers
for 3 hours 23 minutes each week.
However, even
though the local broadband market has gone through significant changes over the
past year or so, UK
is way behind some other regions. The Far East and some European countries like
Sweden are currently enjoying
speeds of up to 100Mb, 50 times faster than today’s standard 2Mb connection in
the UK.
In addition, average
connection speed in the UK
is 2Mb at an average cost of £16 per month while top connection speed available
is 24Mb at a cost of £24 per month. However, the average speed for broadband in
Japan is 26 Mbps with average costs at about £11- £12 per month while 90% of
Korea has 3 Mbps Internet speeds which cost less than £11 per month.
