Point Topic has reported that the second quarter of 2006 (from April to
June) seems to have been the worst period for UK’s broadband market for the past
two years. The broadband communications research firm estimates that the net
number of new broadband connections rose by only 730,000, nearly 300,000 less
than in the previous quarter and 16% down on the same quarter last year.
Point Topic says market turmoil seems to be the major reason for the
decline in the number of new connections, with the industry facing huge
financial risks and ISPs competing over a shrinking number of new users.
Although historically the second quarter is usually the weakest of the year for
broadband, Point Topic noted that the growing number of “free” or cut-price
offers being introduced to the market has held back growth as well.
