Somerset gears up for next-gen broadband initiative

Jul 3, 2006

The Somerset County Council’s Economic Development team is gearing up to introduce its Next Generation Broadband (NGB) program following the successful implementation of its Connecting Somerset initiative, a project which saw broadband service being made available to all towns and villages across the county.

Thanks to a combination of wireless and fiber-optic cable technology, NGB is expected to provide higher speed internet communication to homes and businesses. The council is expecting that the new program will open up a wealth of opportunities and impact the way education and public services operate and how locals can use information and the Internet.

“Somerset’s Next Generation Broadband aims to attract the best broadband suppliers by showing there is a ready market for the service and in doing so making Somerset one of the best connected places in the UK to do business, to learn and live,” says Dave Cornish, Somerset County Council’s Business and Strategy Manager.
